The first Thomson-Houston
sockets used baseless bulbs as shown below.
Just because a socket has the T-H style base (screw thread base), it does not make it a Thomson-Houston product. There were many different manufacturers of this style socket. The sockets shown below were made by the Thomson-Houston Electric Company. |

Though
the patent above was applied for on 01/17/1889 and approved on 05/27/1890,
this socket was already being sold by Sawyer-Man which had been
bought out by Thomson-Houston. The picture to your right was taken
from an article in Electrical World March 27, 1886. This is shown
as "A New Incandescent Lamp Switch" Also another picture
describes this switch as "SAWYER-MAN Lamp with New Switch"|

When the switch
is turned to the ON position the brass contact bar on the key handle
moves up to make contact with the bulb base, which makes the electrical
connection. |
