The
Edison Electric Light Company, of New York N.Y. was established on
November 15, 1878. It was this Company that provided Edison the financial
support for his early experiments.
The
Edison General Electric Company incorporated in New York on April
24, 1889. Edison created a merger of his electric light manufacturing
companies. These were; Edison Lamp Company, Edison Machine Works,
Bergmann & Company and the Edison Electric Light Company. These
were all merged into the
Edison General Electric Company, of New York N.Y. In the same year
Edison also
acquired the Sprague Electric Railway and Motor Company. By April
15, 1892, It was evident that Edison himself had lost some control
as the Company merged with the Thomson-Houston Electric Company which
was a consolidation forming the General Electric Company. Edison did
not know anything about this merger until after it had happened. However,
Edison still continued to play a major part in many other companies
that he owned.
